Visa Merchant Purchase Inquiry is a tool for Merchants to help increase transparency with Issuers. Millions of chargebacks happen every year because a Cardholder does not recognize the charge or descriptor.

Merchants can provide Issuers additional information about transactions so that they have more information to determine if a chargeback should be filed.

How does VMPI work?

VMPI Steps

The process allows merchant to provide information through an API request.

  1. The Cardholder contacts their Issuers to dispute a Transaction
  2. Visa determines if the Merchant uses the VMPI service
  3. Visa requests more information about a specific Transaction
  4. The Merchant provides additional information about the Transaction
  5. Visa shares the additional information with the Issuer, who discusses the details with the Cardholder
